Our aim is to provide individual eye care and individual eye wear.  We do not see our clients as a number and want to provide a quality product to suit your needs.  We can work with you to achieve the look you desire or give you information about products to assist you make an informed choice.  Our pride in workmanship does not mean we take your eye health for granted.  Our testing procedure is thorough and we take great pride in ensuring your eyes are healthy.  We see a synergy between good ocular health and dispensing amazing glasses.

The practice has been in Blackwood since the 1950’s and has had many owners.  Bryce Hume bought the practice in the early 1990’s after the OPSM group purchased the Holland’s group for whom Bryce worked.  He was the main optometrist until his retirement in September 2011.  The practice retains all records from this time.  Nigel Dunsford and Simone Wyatt bought the practice in 2006 and Nigel is now the optometrist.

Nigel Dunsford

As the owner Nigel believes that excellent care and service is needed to make the practice prosper.  He graduated in 1995 from UNSW and has worked in regional SA and Adelaide in both small practices and large firms.  In 2012 he finished an ocular therapeutics course which allows him to prescribe eye medications privately and through the pharmaceutical benefits Scheme (PBS).  These medications treat all sorts of eye infections and inflammations.

Kathy Nicholas

Kathy has been working in the optical industry for over ten years in both South Australia and New South Wales.  Starting out for one of the major companies working in their retail stores she gained valuable knowledge and experience.  In 2010 she was asked to help set up a new practice for an independent Optometrist in Sydney. During this time she gained valuable experience in merchandising and buying frames.

She has been with Blackwood Optical since relocating back to Adelaide in 2011 and enjoys the fact we are an independent family owned practice in a great community where we have many regular customers that are treated individually.  She enjoys helping people choose frames that suit them and their personality and the fact we do our own buying means if you are after a look we don’t have, we have the resources to source it for you.

Karen Woodroffe

Karen works part time at Blackwood Optical.  She enjoys the interaction with our customers and the challenge of learning new skills that allow her to perform her role more effectively.  Her interests outside of work are bike riding, tennis, hiking, fun dinners with friends/family, and reading a good book.
